Custom Design/Rx Fitness Studios, LLC was established by me, Phillip F. Arthur in the fall of 1993. I have always had an interest in individual sports, athletics, nutrition, and medicine. As a freshman in high school, I lettered in three sports. I was voted most valuable sprinter for the duration of my high school career.
I joined the United States Army, Infantry after graduating from high school. During this time our platoon won The Department of Defense Marathon. While serving in Germany, our 4 man team placed thirty second out of seventy two teams in the NATO Volkmarch. This self navigating, off road course over three mountains, in uniform fatigues took 7 hours and 20 minutes. From this point, I continued to train for the Olympic Trials as a 400 meter sprinter.
In November 1994, an industrial accident resulted in dual herniated discs and paralysis through my lower extremities. The diagnoses of 4 neurosurgeons suggested immediate surgical intervention. Dr. Gary Rea, at Ohio State Spine Center and I choose not to perform emergency surgery pending the results of a scheduled mylogram.

Following this procedure, Dr. Rea determined that surgery was not warranted. Instead, we increased the amount of certain nutrients, incorporated stretching, exercises, physical therapy, and resistance training into my recovery efforts. Although the hope of Olympic sprinting was out of the picture, I was able to train as a body builder and placed in the top 3 at Mr. Ohio Natural (NPC) in 1995 - 1996.
Furthermore, while training out of Columbus, Ohio, Louise Simon of West Side Barbell provided some important information in regards to spinal herniation and recovery. This advice on training and rehabilitation was a stepping stone to my full recovery. In addition, I received important guidance from Arnold Coleman of Total Fitness and Mike McCloud also of Columbus, Ohio. I also received many prayers and kindness through this difficult time which was the key to my full recovery.
These professionals and athletes helped prepare me for my future at Ohio University where I triple majored in Exercise Physiology - Premedical, Interpersonal Communication in Human Service and Gerontology with aspirations on attending medical college. My experience and training career placed me at an advantage over my classmates, I knew what I wanted to achieve out of the education process.

As a requirement for medical college, I needed eight hundred hours of observation time which included surgery. I worked for The James Cancer Center for one year, in this time it was obvious that basic science principles, laboratory tests and protocols would prevent and eliminate certain medical complications, diseases, surgeries and related symptoms.
Anthroposophic Medicine is a holistic and human centered form of medicine that recognizes and uses vast information acquired by modern medicine in the field of anatomy, physiology, biochemistry and diagnosis. In addition, Anthroposophic Medicine uses the knowledge of the laws of organism, psychic and the spirit. The result is an integrated image of a whole human in illness and in heath. This makes it possible to have a holistic but also rational approach to physiology, pathology and therapy.
My recovery aroused a profound interest and education in nutrition, biomechanics, physics, genetics, human physiology, exercise physiology, microbiology, chemistry, gerontology, nutrition, athlete performance and kinesiology as it relate to health, fitness, rehabilitation and sport specific training and nutrition.
